Intermediate Preschool in Tigard

The Curious Twiga Intermediate Level Preschool at Safari Kid of Tigard

For 3-year-olds who have completed our beginner-level program, the Curious Twiga Intermediate Level Preschool offers a more structured and challenging curriculum designed to meet children exactly where they are developmentally. This is the natural next step: deeper exploration, greater complexity, and the individualized care and attention that helps each child grow at their own pace.

Small class sizes keep learning personal. Our educators know each child’s strengths, curiosity, and emerging skills, so they can challenge and support your child in ways a generic classroom can’t. The result is a solid educational foundation that bridges toward creative thinking, independent problem-solving, and the pre-kindergarten program ahead.

Five Development Domains, One Whole Child

The Curious Twiga program is built around whole child development, addressing five named domains through engaging curriculum and nurturing guidance. At age 3, children are growing rapidly across cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and language dimensions all at once. Our curriculum meets that growth with intention.

Cognitive Development

Children at the intermediate level are ready for greater intellectual challenge. Advanced hands-on and problem-solving activities involving numeracy, patterns, and cause-and-effect relationships give your child’s developing mind real problems to work through. Open-ended play and artistic projects stimulate curiosity, imagination, adaptability, and creativity, building the determination and tenacity that can carry children forward.

Language & Literacy Development

Storytelling, phonics, language games, and read-alouds are woven into daily activities to develop reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. The program also expands vocabulary in a foreign language and sign language, giving children an early connection to communication that reaches beyond English from the start.

Physical Development

Fine motor skills, hand-muscle control, and hand-eye coordination are refined through activities designed for this level. Complex indoor and outdoor active play builds strength, coordination, and spatial awareness, and yoga sequences develop flexibility and body awareness in an age-appropriate, engaging way.

Social & Emotional Development

In a cooperative play environment, children practice perspective-taking and build kindness, compassion, and empathy through daily interaction with peers. When disagreements arise, children practice independent conflict resolution through negotiation and finding win-win solutions, rather than defaulting to adult intervention.

Health & Care Development

Managing complex emotions is a real skill, and we help children name, understand, and work through what they feel. Advanced mindfulness and breathing techniques give children tools they can reach for on their own, building the self-awareness and regulation that support wellbeing in school and at home.

The WISDOM Learning Path & the Educators Behind It

Every program at Safari Kid of Tigard is guided by the WISDOM Learning Path: Wonder, Imagination, Security, Discussion, Observation, and Mentorship. This framework shapes how our teachers approach each child, tracking developmental milestones and meeting your child where they are rather than where the calendar says they should be. The intermediate program puts this framework to work across all five development domains, with teachers who bring the curriculum to life through child-centered mentorship.

Director Diane Miura brings over 20 years in early childhood education to Safari Kid of Tigard, having started as a teacher’s aide and worked up through lead teaching and director roles. Preschool teacher Julie has been teaching since 2017 and brings a multicultural and multilingual perspective shaped by international experience across 19 countries. These educators understand child development deeply and show up for your child every day with that knowledge in hand.

Parents as Partners in Your Child’s Progress

We don’t think the learning relationship ends at drop-off. Through Procare, social media updates, and regular family engagement opportunities, we keep Tigard families connected to what their child is experiencing and learning at the intermediate level. You’ll have visibility into daily activities, milestones, and how your child is growing across all five development domains.
